Product Details

Prairie Sky Poplar is a deciduous tree known for its striking silver-green foliage and upright, columnar form. The leaves are triangular to diamond-shaped, glossy green on the top surface, and silvery-white underneath, providing an attractive contrast when the wind rustles through the branches. In the fall, the foliage turns a vibrant yellow, adding to its ornamental appeal.

  • Size: When planted in suitable conditions, Prairie Sky Poplars can grow relatively quickly, often adding 5 to 8 feet (1.5 to 2.5 meters) of height per year in optimal growing conditions. Mature specimens typically reach their full height within 20 to 30 years, growing to 40-50 ft. making them an excellent choice for quick privacy screens or windbreaks.
  • Location: Plant Prairie Sky Poplars in full sun for the best growth and foliage color. They prefer moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate a wide range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils.
  • Watering: While these trees are relatively drought-tolerant once established, it's essential to provide adequate water, especially during the first few years after planting. Water deeply and regularly, particularly during hot, dry periods.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning is typically required for Prairie Sky Poplars. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed. Additionally, you can prune to shape the tree or maintain its desired size if necessary.
  • Fertilization: These trees benefit from a balanced fertilizer application in early spring to support healthy growth. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for application rates based on the tree's size and age.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or shredded bark, around the base of the tree to help retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth. Keep the mulch several inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.
  • Pest and Disease Management: Prairie Sky Poplars are relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, occasional inspection for common issues such as aphids, caterpillars, and leaf spot diseases is recommended. Treat any problems promptly to prevent them from spreading.
